Sara rode down to the surface of Leaping Deer on the same shuttle as Jack. The two of them had a fighter escort and plenty of pinnaces, making certain no one got close to them, but they were still taking a risk. While she thought the work could be done remotely, he disagreed, and this was his show, so down they went.

With the devastation the Novarites and Tardans had inflicted on Leaping Deer, the major cities were heavily damaged, if not outright destroyed. It wasn’t nearly as bad as what was taking place on Vesuvius, but it was still terrible. The loss of life was unimaginable. Their enemies needed to pay for what they’d done, and she supposed that was one of the reasons they were coming down.

Jack had a tablet and was reviewing the information Ryan Birdsall—the president of Leaping Deer—had sent. She wasn’t going to read it, at least not now. She knew enough of the general shape of things to realize it would take decades for this world to recover. And that was only if they settled their business with the Poseidon Group. If a civil war started raging, it might be centuries before Leaping Deer regained what it had lost.

Those thoughts kept flitting around her brain until the shuttle landed at what had once been an auxiliary shuttle port for one of the minor towns not far away from the capital. It was too distant to be a suburb but close enough to have been damaged in the attacks, though it hadn’t been leveled.

The Marines were out in force, forming up around the shuttle before she and Jack exited. He hadn’t brought India. If there was trouble, he wanted to have their ships ready to react.

A group of people was waiting for them, and the man standing out front matched the image she had from the records as the president of Leaping Deer. At least it was close enough for her to recognize him. It looked like he’d lost forty pounds since the invasion. He looked like he could use a dozen meals and uninterrupted sleep for a few months. Not that she expected him to get that, not with all the work that he undoubtedly had on his desk.

He stepped forward and smiled as he extended his hand to Jack. “Admiral Romanoff, it’s a pleasure to finally meet you in person. On behalf of Leaping Deer, I want to thank you for everything you’ve done. Things are bad, but they would’ve been so much worse if you hadn’t been here to intervene. Thank you.”

“I’m sorry we couldn’t have been here sooner. Things have been pretty ugly all across the cluster, and you caught some of the worst damage, though not as bad as Vesuvius. The Novarites are still there, and it looks like they’re busy trying to exterminate all the humans on that world. I can only suspect that’s what their plans were for Leaping Deer as well.”

Birdsall frowned but nodded. “I can see where that’s possible.
